Now in its seventh year, the Rochester Real Beer Week is an exciting calendar of events in and around the Flower City designed to introduce you to the rapidly expanding craft beer scene. You can find the full calendar of events here. Of course, it’s impossible to attend all of the events outlined in the guidebook, but here’s a few that caught our eye. Note that some events have an admission fee or require advance tickets.
Saturday, June 10
Rochester Real Beer Expo
This is the main event. The Rochester Real Beer Expo is an awesome block party that takes over most of Gregory Street around Tap & Mallet in the South Wedge neighborhood. Brought to you by the Business Association of the South Wedge Area (BASWA), there will be more than 120 craft beers for you to sample and compare. Proceeds from the event help fund neighborhood improvements, and you can get your tickets at Eventbrite.
Sunday, June 11
A Remarkably Cool Bottle Share
Blu Wolf Bistro on Park Avenue is hosting a bottle share party with a number of rare specimens provided by craft beverage distributor Remarkable Liquids. Look for selections from Grimm, Fantome, Evil Twin, Side Project, Jester King, Cantillon, and more. If you bring your own bottles to share, there is a $5.00 corkage fee that will be donated to charity.
Monday, June 12
Get Drunken and Naked
One of our favorite events from last year is hosted by South Wedge neighborhood staple Caverly’s Irish Pub (741 South Avenue, Rochester). Local eatery Mise en Place will be grilling up “drunken” sausages outside, while you can enjoy a Naked Dove tap takeover with $3.50 pints inside. Don’t be surprised if you run into Naked Dove co-founder Don Cotter raising a pint with you while you’re there.
Tuesday, June 13
Support New York State Beers
It’s Taco Tuesday at Jack Ryan’s Tavern (825 Atlantic Avenue, Rochester), where you can enjoy dollar-off any beer brewed in New York State. This great neighborhood location has plenty of room at the bar, as well as pool and darts in the back room.
Wednesday, June 14
DIPA Brah Cask Tapping
If it’s Wednesday, that means most likely you will find me at Swiftwater Brewing (378 Mt. Hope Avenue, Rochester). On this occasion they will be tapping a special cash of their DIPA (double India Pale Ale) Brah featuring flavors of coconut, pineapple, star anise, and vanilla. Doors open at 4:00 p.m., so come thirsty, and stay for dinner.
Thursday, June 15
The Isotopes at Star Alley Park
If you have never experienced a live show by Rochester’s surf rock kings, then you owe it to yourself to check out The Isotopes playing a special FREE show in Star Alley Park next to LUX Lounge (666 South Avenue, Rochester). Enjoy the “Craft Can Craze” beer tasting hosted by T.J. Sheehan Distributing next door at LUX, because you can’t listen to The Isotopes sober.
Friday, June 16
Pinball Tournament and Tap Takeover
Are you a pinball wizard? Our favorite neighborhood barcade The Playhouse//Swillburger (820 S. Clinton Avenue, Rochester) is hosting a pinball tournament and tap takeover by Community Beer Works. You owe it to yourself to check out the offerings from this great craft brewery from Buffalo and try your hand at besting the Bally table king.
Saturday, June 17
Local Brewers IPA Challenge
Tap & Mallet (381 Gregory Street, Rochester) challenged all Rochester area breweries to bring their best hazy India Pale Ale to the table. Presented as a blind taste test, the results will be announced at 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, June 18
All You Can Eat Father’s Day BBQ
Still standing? Then head on over to the Genesee Brew House (25 Cataract Street, Rochester) for some great barbecue overlooking the High Falls in the Beer Garden. Tickets are $30.00 general admission, $15.00 age 12 and under. Your ticket includes one complimentary pint of beer for dad! Get your tickets on Eventbrite.
I hope you enjoy this selection of special events for Rochester Real Beer Week. If you see me out and about, make sure to say hello!
